Rajju Porutham in Marriage

 It is an essential Hindu tradition to get a boy and a girl married according to the poruthams. The parents along with the older family members of the boy and of the girl meet to follow a methodology charted out by the ancient sages of India. This is referred to as 'match making' or marriage matching.

The methodology is based on the study of the birth stars or nakshatras and the planets or grahas of the couple who want to get married because these together cause their astral influence in the lives of the two individuals.

Importance of Rajju Porutham

Rajju is the sixth of the ten poruthams necessary to solemnize a Hindu marriage. It is said to be the most important out of the ten kootas or poruthams because it has in consideration the husband's long life if the Rajju porutham is properly studied and applied. This is important because the husband's long life ensures a happy relationship with his wife and would lead to a happy long life for both.

There are four types of Rajju Porutham

1. Paatha Rajju ( Body Part : Foot )
   1. Planets : Ketu and Mercury
   2. Traditional Astrology Belief : Will impact marital relationship in such a way husband will leave to Kasi yatra or go away from wife
   3. Time Science Astrology Logical Explanation: A person leaving his wife is related to 3rd and 12th bhava. 

   4. Paatha Rajju represents the foot part of the body. Paatha Rajju is a group of six stars – Aswini, Magham, Moolam, Ayilyam, Kettai and Revathi. 

      If the boy's and the girl's nakshatra belong to this group and the marriage happens, it is predicted by authors of the science that there is a chance of getting hurt, physical or material, during travel.

2. Ooru/Thodai Rajju ( Body Part : Thighs / Reproductive organ )
   1. Planets : Venus and Saturn
   2. Traditional Astrology Belief : Will adversely impact Sexual Life
   3. Time Science Astrology Logical Explanation:Sexual life is depend up on 8th Bhava of each ones chart. Rajju match had nothing to do it. 

   4. Thodai Rajju represents the thighs part of the body or the lap. The nakshatras that are part of this group include Bharani, Poosam, Pooram, Anusham, Pooraadam and Uthirattathi.

      A wedding involving a boy and girl of any of the stars in the group could result in damages to properties in the course of their married life.

3. Uthara Rajju ( Body Part : Stomach / Uterus )
   1. Planets : Sun and Jupiter
   2. Traditional Astrology Belief : Will impact child. May lead to child with mentally disabled
   3. Time Science Astrology explanation: Longevity or character of a child is determined by its own birth time, Not their parents

4. Kanda Rajju ( Body Part : Throat )

1. 1. Planets : Moon and Rahu
   2. Traditional Astrology Belief : Represent Mangalyam / Thali of wife. So represent Longevity of husband
   3. Time Science Astrology explanation: One person’s Longevity is determined by his birth time only. No one can impact this. Only a killer can influence it. Not a wife / Husband. 
   4. Kanda means neck and kanda rajju represents the neck region of the body. The nakshatra group of this rajju are Rohini, Thiruvathirai, Hastham, Swathi, Thiruvonam and Sathayam. The kanda rajju mismatch forbodes possible harm to the life and well-being of the wife, if a marriage is conducted ignoring this.

5. Sirasu Rajju ( Body Part : Head )

1. Planets : Mars
2. Belief: Will impact again husband. ( Husband is “head” of the family)
3. Time Science Logic : One persons Longevity is determinded by his birth time only. No one can impact this. Only a killer can influence it. Not a wife / Husband. 

4. Sirasu represents the head. The group of nakshatras that are part of this Sirasu Rajju are Mirugasirisa, Avittam, and Chitthirai. These three stars do not match each other and in marriages conducted with the stars of the same rajju are not compatible. When there is a mismatch here, possible danger to the life and well-being of the husband is seen. Verdict : Rajju Match is not at all related to the belief.

Here, the birth stars of both the girl and the boy are formed into groups, each group then representing an essential part of the body.

The head is represented by the stars Chitra, Mirgasira and Dhanishta are in siro rajju and the neck portion of the body is represented by the stars Ardhra, Rohini, Swati, Hasta, Sravana and Satabisha, these stars are in kanta rajju. The stars Krithika, Uttara, Punarvasu, Visaka, Purvabadra and Uttrashada represent the middle portion of the body and they are in nabhi rajju. The thigh is represented by the stars Pushya, Barani, Pubba, Anuradha, Uttarabadra and Purvashada are in kati rajju and the foot is represented by Aswini, Aslekha, Maka, Moola, Jyeshta and Revati are in pada rajju.

If the stars of both the girl and the boy are found to be represent the same portion of the body such as head for both or a foot for both then it signifies that there is no agreement between the stars.

This is how their interpretation goes:

• if the stars of both are found to be in the same portion as the head, the husband will die soon
• if the portion is the neck for both then the wife will die soon
• if they are the same as for the middle portion, then it means that the children will die
• If the stars represent the same portion for both under the thigh, it is interpreted as extreme poverty
• if the foot is the body portion which the stars of both are found to represent then it is interpreted as pathetic wandering

Therefore, the Rajju agreement is very important as on this hinge the rest of the poruthams.
